Meet John Reid
John Laurance Reid is a seasoned attorney with decades of legal experience and is the founder of the Law Office of John Reid PLLC. His practice encompasses government and administrative law as well as family law, civil litigation, state appeals, and governmental relations. John also serves on the Federal Judicial Nominations Conference, which is tasked with recommending judicial nominees and other federal officials to the President of the United States.
John currently serves as the Board Counsel to the Tallahassee Independent Ethics Board where he advises the Board on enforcement responsibilities and training curricula. His work is essential to ensuring that the Board operates in compliance with the mandate provided by the charter and that the curricula align with the applicable laws, ordinances, and rules. John assists the Ethics Officer in evaluating current administrative procedures, bylaws, and city ordinances. In addition, John reviews complaints for legal sufficiency and probable cause, drafts advisory opinions and final orders, and provides recommendations to the Tallahassee Code of Ethics and the Ethics Board's bylaws and administrative procedures. As Board Counsel, John drafted much of Tallahassee’s new ethics code ordinance which was passed by the City Commission in December 2019. The new ordinance makes the Capital City’s ethics code among the most robust of all local governments in the State of Florida.
Additionally, John serves as the Town Attorney to the Town of Greenville in Madison County, which is the childhood home of music legend Ray Charles. In Greenville, John is responsible for drafting ordinances and advising public officials on all aspects of local government and has revised the Town’s Charter and rewritten the Code of Ordinances for the Town.
John is an experienced administrative law attorney, representing clients from around the state in Chap. 120 actions against state agencies and departments before the Division of Administrative Hearings. John focuses on matters pertaining to workers’ compensation insurance compliance, state disciplinary actions, and licensure issues.
John is a founding member of the North Florida Chapter of the American Constitution Society. ACS is a national organization that advocates the interpretation of the Constitution based on its text against the backdrop of history and lived experiences, ensuring that law is a force for protecting our democracy and the public interest and for improving people’s lives.
John is a frequent speaker on issue of the law, appearing on panels and providing guest lectures on matters such as Florida’s 2018 constitutional amendments, Whistle-blower’s statute, Florida’s Sunshine and Public Records laws, and state and local ethics codes. John has guest lectured at the FSU College of Law.
Additionally, John appears weekly on Real Talk 93.3 FM where he is featured in a 30-minute segment, entitled Real Conversations, where he debates a fellow attorney on the latest issues facing the nation, state, and local community. On the same station, John also hosts his own weekly radio program every Sunday at 12:00 p.m, focused on politics and the law, entitled Capital Connections with John Reid.
A graduate of the University of Miami School of Law, John has been a licensed attorney since 2000. He is admitted to practice law in Florida and the District of Columbia and is admitted to the United State Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Florida.
John is happily married with two (2) beautiful children. The Reid family lives in Tallahassee, Florida.
